CRYPTID SPAWN’S initial offering to the black metal canon is a polarizing but influential mini album comprised of primitive, atmospheric, and evil sounds. ‘Black Phosphorous Dungeon’ punishes the ear-to-brain pipeline with slow, bludgeoning riffs, minimalist drumming, and distorted, bestial vocals. The lyrics point to the bleak moments lived in this modern era of genocide and warfare such as Palestinians, Rohingya, Uyghur, Sudanese and this list goes on etc. Though some may find its production muddy and vocals alienating, they have created a divisive but revered experience for dedicated underground metal fans by blending raw black metal with death/doom, hardcore punk and ambient textures. ‘Black Phosphorous Dungeon’ stands out for its unique, ritualistic atmosphere and deep-tuned, fuzzed guitars that create a crushing, immersive feel.
